Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the investigation and treatment of disorders of the brain and spinal cord ( nervous system) including epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, motor neurone disease, stroke and other disorders requiring specialist assessment such as headache and dizziness.

The Department of Neurology provides clinics in:

  • General Neurology and Movement Disorders
  • Epilepsy. – including Epilepsy Specialist Nurse
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)Ìý –Ìý including MS specialist nurse
  • Parkinson’s Disease (PD) – including PD specialist nurse
  • Motor Neurone disease (MND)
  • Neurophysiology
  • Stroke and transient ischaemic attacks
  • Neuro-rehabilitation
  • Botulinum toxin therapy for spasticity, dystonia, drooling and migraine

The Neurology inpatient service (except hyper acute stroke) is based on Patients requiring specialist neurological rehabilitation may beÌýtransferred or directly admitted to ÌýUnitÌýHighgate Park, 51ÁÔÆæ, North Yorkshire, HG1 4PA

The Neurology Department also provides in-patient and out – patient physiotherapy/speech therapy/occupational therapy/dietetics.

Epilepsy Specialist Nurse – Victoria Baiden

The Epilepsy Nurse Specialist provides support for in-patient, out-patient and primary care providing education and general advice on the management of epilepsy, including but not limited to the management and adjustments to anti-seizure medications, lifestyle, safety and first aid, pregnancy, whilst working alongside consultant neurologists and wider Multi-disciplinary team.

Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Nurse – Sarah Ryder

The specialist Multiple Sclerosis nurse works collaboratively with the Consultant Neurologists and patients’ GPs, linking in with the wider multidisciplinary neurology team, which consists of our neuro rehabilitation consultant, neuro physiotherapists and occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, the continence team and dietitians. The service provides high quality multidisciplinary care for patients and their families.

Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists – Angela Horner and Sara Reeves

The specialist Parkinson’s disease nurses work collaboratively with the Consultant Neurologists, provide in-patient and primary care support whilst linking in with the wider multidisciplinary neurology team, which consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and dietitians. They aim is to provide an easily accessible service providing high quality multidisciplinary care for patients, family and carers.
