51ÁÔÆæ cares for the population in 51ÁÔÆæ and the local area as well as across North Yorkshire and Leeds. We also provide children’s services in the North East in County Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Gateshead and Sunderland.
The Maternity Unit at 51ÁÔÆæ District Hospital provides care for approximately 1700 births annually and we welcome people from 51ÁÔÆæ and from the surrounding areas to have care with us.
Our aim is to work in partnership, to provide women and their family with a safe, friendly and effective service, aiming to deliver the highest standard of care throughout pregnancy, birth and during the first few weeks following baby’s birth. The maternity department is responsible for providing all care to pregnant women and birthing people, and providing support for their families throughout the pregnancy and birth continuum. The department includes hospital and community based midwifery services.
Maternity Services is part of the Planned and Surgical Care Directorate at the Trust. The Planned and Surgical Care Directorate is responsible for delivering high quality and effective midwifery, nursing and medical care to patients within the hospital base, out-patients and community settings.

Born and Bred inÌý51ÁÔÆæÌýis a project being run byÌý51ÁÔÆæÌýand is part of a group of ‘’ research projects about families and children to help us learn more about how families in our local area and beyond can live healthier, happier lives.

How does it workÌý
Women booked for maternity care atÌý51ÁÔÆæÌýDistrictÌýHospital will be invited to become part of the study by one of our midwives during routine antenatal appointments. If happy to participate, health researchers will join data about mother and child, looking into ways to improve healthcare and services through research and planning inÌý51ÁÔÆæÌýand beyond.Ìý

The generation study
The Generation Study opened to recruitment at in late July and we’ve had an amazing response so far, with 230 participants agreeing to take part to date!
Run by in partnership with the NHS, the Generation Study is investigating the genomes of newborn babies to look for 200+ rare conditions which usually appear in early childhood and can be treated within the NHS. The study will help us to learn more about genes and health, so that we can improve testing and treatment for genetic conditions in the future.
If you are currently pregnant and 16+ years old, you may be eligible to take part.
The test takes place shortly after birth: a small sample of blood is taken from the umbilical cord for most babies, with the option for a heel prick instead if cord blood sampling is unsuccessful. Test results are received within a few months.
Taking part is free and optional.
